It will be clear from this that spiritual and moral development cannot be the sole preserve of RE. In theory, at least, the whole school ethos expressing the values a school community holds, the acts of collective worship and all the different subjects of the school curriculum— science, English, RE, music and so on —should make their contribution. Whereas RE is only one of many partners in spiritual and moral development it would be surprising if the subject did not have a particularly major contribution to make to spiritual and moral development because in many ways it is seeking the same ends.
