Hyperglycemia at the time of cerebral ischemia increases the risk of hemorrhage on reperfusion . Cerebral hemorrhage has been the major complication for thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke and parameters that might be used to indicate the risk of hemorrhage could have major clinical importance. In our studies, the increased risk of hemorrhage on reperfusion in hyperglycemic rats was associated with a marked reduction in CPV during ischemia. It is possible, therefore, that CPV could be a useful predictor of an enhanced risk of hemorrhage in thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke.

On each face, we measured the specific gravity of the cortical slice including the middle 1/3 segment between the interhemispheric fissure (IF) and the rhinal fissure(RF). We also performed histolo"ical examination of the coronal section of each face just opposite ~o the area used for the measurement of specific gravity.
