All the young men in Air Force blue, already so far from home, burst into laughter. Umgeni was delayed for almost four weeks in three ports because waterside workers refused to handle frozen lamb in wet conditions. ’ the airmen joked. But it gave them plenty of opportunities to enjoy renowned Kiwi hospitality and to explore. Eager to experience Maori culture, arriving at Waitara, a traditional village and ancient pa, on the occasion of a great gathering, David was moved that the Australians were welcomed as guests of honour, greeted in the languages of the elders.
Call-up was unlikely before April 1942, but he was required to commence a course of ground subjects immediately. Disappointed yet pleased, David began night classes, the first step towards his goal. More maths and some physics, with morse code and aircraft recognition stimulating new interest and promising action in the air eventually. International events escalated dramatically. Japan, which had invaded China and Manchuria in the 1930s, suddenly revealed further imperial expansionist ambitions.
Flying lessons were the highlight of each day and he awaited his slots eagerly. They were always at different times to allow each trainee to experience varying conditions. After the initial flight as a passenger, for the first week all were with an instructor, practising take-off into wind, powered approach and gliding. Then, at the beginning of November, David went solo for the first time. It was one of the most momentous days of his life, walking across the dewy grass, knowing that he and he alone was responsible for the safety of the little Tiger Moth which meant so much to him.
