" CHAPTER 2 ANCIENT POETIC ETYMOLOGY Homeric Poetry The practices of Homeric etymologizing will be laid out in categories of varying degrees of complexity, which range from the simple and straightforward parono mastic collocations to the more demanding and elaborate categories of narrativ ized and resignified etymologies. The last two rely on the construction of broader units of persistent collocations and clusters of cognates; the narrative capsules produced build simultaneously upon the potential of resonance and the semantics, whose underlying intimate affinities they bring forth.
The con stituents of the analyzed epithets do not necessarily refer back to the noun they qualify; they float freely in the narrative and assume an independent "life" of their own, establishing new syntactic and thematic liaisons. But even so, the sense of coherence is not jeopardized. The poet manages to submit a sense of a broader continuity, lingering for a while on the segmented structures of this sort before he moves on to new ones. Different linguistic and thematic loops supplant the old ones, and the web of the story is woven down to the end.
