I do not think we have ever had anyone of so low a class as that . . 70 A significant development in teacher training in the 1880s was the opening of pupil–teacher centres. These centres concentrated all the academic teaching of pupil–teachers in a particular area into one place. Standards of tuition rose rapidly, and by the end of the century pupil–teacher centres were available in all but remote rural areas. The larger centres were ‘essentially secondary schools’ and the spectacular results which they achieved – in London, for instance, by 1903, 90 per cent of pupils at the centres passed the scholarship for entry to training college71 – was an important factor in the recruitment of more lower middle-class girls to the profession.
